One half, many ways

1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8. Each fraction describes the same proportion of a whole.

1/2

2/4

3/6

How to make an equivalent fraction

  1. Choose a non-zero number.
  2. Multiply the numerator by that number.
  3. Multiply the denominator by the same number.

For 2/3, multiply top and bottom by 2:

2/3 = (2 × 2)/(3 × 2) = 4/6

You can also divide the top and bottom by the same common factor to simplify a fraction.

Key rule: whatever you do to the numerator, do the same to the denominator to keep the value unchanged.
