Addition

Make the denominators the same, then add the numerators.

1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4

With different denominators: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.

Subtraction

Use a common denominator, then subtract the numerators.

5/6 − 1/6 = 4/6 = 2/3

Always simplify your answer if possible.

Multiplication

Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.

2/3 × 3/5 = 6/15 = 2/5

Division

Keep the first fraction, flip the second fraction, and multiply.

1/2 ÷ 3/4 = 1/2 × 4/3 = 4/6 = 2/3

The flipped fraction is called the reciprocal.

Check your answer: simplify where possible, and think about whether the size of your answer makes sense.
