Reusable Water Bottles
Suzanne Williams provides advice on hydration and a variety of reusable water bottles.
The Water Bottle
shop is a new website created to bring together the best reusable water bottles on the market. We will help you find the perfect bottle that you will use every day. Helping you reduce waste and stay hydrated no matter what the activity.
Choose to reuse your water bottle
We know the implications of single-use plastic so why not choose a reusable water bottle?
According to a YouGov survey, most people in the UK are still happy to buy plastic bottles when they are out and about instead of carrying a reusable water bottle with people blaming inconvenience or forgetfulness.
UK tap water is some of the best in the world and is subject to rigorous testing. And with a reusable water bottle, you get free refills for life, 24 hours a day?
Did you know there are refill stations all over the UK? There are even apps to help you locate your nearest one.
Shop-bought bottled water is not tested to the same set of high standards as tap water and it has a shelf life, plus the pounds spent on bottled water quickly add up. Keep your cash for treats instead!
The Importance of Hydration
Hydration is vital for everyone but especially for athletes. Not only will drinking enough water help energize you in the morning and avoid that afternoon slump, and give you better skin, but staying hydrated is key to ensuring your body and mind are performing at their best during exercise.
Staying properly hydrated lubricates your joints and prevents cramps. It is imperative for keeping your mind sharp, which is crucial, especially for sports such as climbing where a mistake could be fatal. So there are plenty of reasons to have a good water bottle with you at all times.
One reason athletes might not opt for a reusable water bottle and instead reach for disposable plastic is isotonic sports drinks. Research indicates that water is all you need for short sessions of an hour or less, but beyond that, you may need to replace your salts and sugars to maintain maximum performance.
There are however alternatives to an expensive sports drink in a throwaway bottle. Sports drinks are essentially just water with three things added.
- Carbohydrate (sugar) provides energy and replaces your glycogen stores.
- Sodium (salt) helps to speed up rehydration, balances fluid levels, and replaces the salts you lose from sweating.
- And flavoring to make it taste nice.
Therefore it is very easy to make your rehydration drink by adding a pinch of salt to cordial or fruit juice. And there are plenty of recipes available online to make sure you get the ratios right.
Choosing the perfect sports water bottle:
Choosing the perfect sports water bottle is no easy task. Especially when there are so many on the market. First, think about what you will be using the bottle for. If you are a keen hiker, a water bottle that can be clipped to a carabiner is super handy and if you want a bottle for the gym you might want a sports cap. While cyclists will want to think about the size of their bike cage.
Key things to consider might include:
- Size of the opening.
- Type of cap. Do you need a sports cap?
- Size of bottle/capacity.
- Weight.
- Material - Glass bottles, stainless steel, or silicone.
- Do you require insulation? For cold water and hot coffee.
You can narrow down your search using all these criteria. Then it is just a question of picking your favourite colour.
Our favourite sports water bottles
All these bottles are perfect for sports. If you are looking for a great everyday lightweight bottle then a single wall water bottle is probably best, and we love the FOSH Active or Klean Kanteen. Or opt for an insulated water bottle to keep drinks piping hot or ice cold.

Klean Kanteen Cafe Cap
And if you are more likely to be watching sports than playing them, we highly recommend a Klean Kanteen wide bottle with Cafe Cap. This water bottle is perfect for coffee or hot chocolate to keep you warm on the sideline but equally great to take water to the gym if you get the urge.
The leak-proof lid is easy to twist open and closed and drinks stay hot or cold for hours. Plus we have used ours for ice cream and hotdogs. Though not together of course! |
